Hyaluronic acid (HA) may not be a trendy skin care ingredient any longer, but it still generates a lot of buzz because it gives your skin a younger, fresher and more supple look. While the word acid makes it sound harsh, HA is something that your body makes naturally, so it easily absorbs into your skin.
HA is often touted for its amazing ability to hold between 500 and 1000 times its own weight in water. This makes it particularly helpful in skin care products because HA creates a cushion to help plump the appearance of aging skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Thanks to its water-binding and water-attracting attributes, HA fills up the spaces between the connective fibers of collagen and elastin in the dermis layer of your skin.
In some circles, HA is even touted as “key to the fountain of youth.” Youthful skin retains its elasticity, resilience and pliability due to its high content of water. That changes over time as your skin’s aging process is influenced by the hormonal changes you’ll experience over the course of your life.
Changes in hormone levels influence your skin because your hormones influence the production of HA and collagen which are vital to maintaining your skin’s layers and structure. Collagen gives your skin its firmness, and HA nourishes and hydrates the collagen. As people age, their bodies produce signifcantly less HA and their skin naturally becomes drier, less elastic and wrinkled.
The key to maintaining a smoother, younger looking complexion is keeping your skin hydrated. However, many people confuse dry (meaning oil dry) skin and dehydrated skin (meaning moisture dry). Applying richer, oilier products to dehydrated skin may temporarily make the skin feel softer, but they will not actually help resolve the problem. The key to treating dehydrated skin is to exfoliate and use high-quality, nontoxic skin care products that are rich in moisture and contain powerful humectants, like HA.
The special hyaluronic acid used in our Previse recipes stimulates the expression of ZO1 and Occludin proteins that are constitutive proteins of tight junctions. This improves cell cohesion and the barrier function of the skin. It also maintains hydration in the skin through a water reservoir function in the dermis thanks to the high hygroscopic ability of the HA we use. Through both of these complementary actions, Hyaluronic acid regulates the internal hydration of the skin and improves firmness by stimulating collagen in the dermis.
